WORLD CUP 2011 IS OURS

WORLD CUP 2011 IS OURS

By Azhar Mohammed K

Finally after 28 years of long wait, India has done it again. It was a combination of experience, talent and strong determination that has resulted in India lifting the World Cup 2011 at the Wankhede stadium in Mumbai. India outclassed its opposition in all formats of the game. Be it fielding, batting or bowling, they struck to the basics and delivered when needed. It was good to see such a united side backing each other at tense situations. Dhoni, the cool minded captain proved once again that he has the midas touch with him. A balanced innings from him in the final saw India through to winning the cup and the ultimate glory that each cricketing nation had been eager to achieve for the past 6 weeks.

This victory is definitely a team effort as we see contributions coming from nearly all Indian players. Indian team members dedicated this victory to master blaster Sachin Tendulkar who has been so consistent throughout the tournament and finished as the second highest run getter in the tournament. Zaheer Khan bowled his heart out, got necessary break throughs at times and finished being the highest wicket taker in the tournament along with Shahid Afridi (21 wickets). Yuvraj Singh, the man of the tournament, and four times man of the match proved himself to be a perfect all-rounder contributing both with bat and ball. There were excellent contributions from all other players also. Young guns of India, Virat Kohli, Yusuf Pathan and Suresh Raina with their disciplined innings have proved that India has a bright future ahead. There were also good contributions from Harbhajan Singh and Munaf Patel and not to forget the man behind the scenes, the Indian coach, Gary Kirsten who was always there with the team giving continuous support and sharing his vast experience. He made India the number one team in the test side a few months back and now India is numero uno in the ODI as well.

The emotions shown by the players in the field after the victory had a story to tell. It showed their hard work done and their determination to achieve the goal. It was wonderful to see ‘Sachin’ and ‘Kirsten’ being carried on the field on the shoulders of Gambhir and Raina as a tribute to them.

It is definitely a very proud moment for we Indians as the cup is finally ours. This moment will be cherished always by all cricketing fans. This moment has gone down to history as one of the finest cricketing performances and Dhoni and co will always be remembered when cricket is spoken of. May Indian cricket team continue to achieve new peaks in the days to come and retain this terrific form of winning. Jai Ho!
