Whither reservations?

A delegation of popular Christian priests and politicians has met the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu Mr. M. Karunanidhi and appealed to him that the exclusive 3.5% reservation in education and employment for Christians should be abrogated. Their contention based on their assessment particularly in the MBBS admissions is that it is detrimental to the interest of the Christian community. There must be some strong ground for them to make such an unexpected and bold demand. All glitterings are not gold. Let the Muslim leaders who harp on the benefits of the reservation look into this issue seriously, analyse it thread and bare and come to a conslusion. They should find out where the Muslim community stands now with 3.5% quota.

One feels that the best way to make every community progress educationally is to bring up children efficiently giving them proper training and education right from the beginning and make them capable in every sense of the word instead of depending on reservations. It is clear to all that reservations alone cannot make students able and educationally sound. It is more the question of the survival of the fittest mainly at the present highly materialistic world. As the former President of India Dr. A.P. J. Abdul Kalam says every student should persevere with determination to ahieve his or her goals and parents should be backbone to them extending all assistance and co-operation finacially and otherwise. Our slogan should be "merit".
